Casting for Conservation Litter Gitter Trip

The Litter Gitter is Matanzas Riverkeeper program that engages community members in waterway restoration cleanups to remove trash from local rivers. Participants actively restore vital habitats while learning about litter issues and contributing to scientific data collection.

The Litter Gitter II, a bright yellow 24- foot Carolina Skiff specially equipped for removing large volumes of debris, serves as both a restoration vessel and a floating classroom, giving volunteers hands-on opportunities to experience active habitat restoration. These outings focus on the removal of plastic litter and construction debris from critical fish habitat areas, directly reducing pollution, navigational hazards, and wildlife ingestion and entanglement risks in areas frequented by anglers.
  • Trips generally last about 2 hours (please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled cleanup time).
  • We recommend sun protection including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Please bring a reusable water bottle (no single-use plastic or styrofoam).
  • All volunteers are required to wear closed-toe, protective footwear (waterproof boots are recommended). No sandals or flip flops.
  • Be sure to wear clothing you don't mind getting wet and muddy.
  • The Litter Gitter II will provide all the tools and equipment necessary to collect debris.
  • Please submit an RSVP for each person attending.

These trips are made possible by the NOAA Fisheries Office of Habitat Conservation under the Increasing Recreational Fisheries Engagement through Fish Habitat Partnerships initiative. By collaborating with recreational anglers, the National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP) drives strategic projects to protect, restore, and enhance aquatic ecosystems.
